Tuatahi Kāinga Hou

This papakainga example is situated on a typical large suburban site. A 4-5 bedroom home is located at the front of the site. The centre of the site is used as a communal outdoor area. To the rear of the outdoor area sits a bedsit and 4 bedroom home.

All three whare are arranged around a communal grassed area and covered outdoor area. Carehas been taken to keep vehicular access and parking (x4) to the south and separated fromoutdoor play areas. In achieving this, vehicles are able to turn around safely on site, avoiding thepotential for driveway accidents.

North and west-facing roofed patios on the rear whare allow for sheltered circulation while alldining areas look out to the large north-facing grassed courtyard. While design emphasis hasbeen placed on encouraging communal outdoor activity, both major whare maintain sunnyprivate outdoor withdrawal areas.

Raised bed gardens and fruit trees help to maximise the productive use of yard areas whileallowing easy supervision of open space / tamariki play areas.

The small whare would be suitable for grandparents or a young couple, or equally for a soleparent who is able to receive whanau support while maintaining a level of independence.

The provision of four-bedroom, three-bedroom plus mezzanine, and one bedroom whare in thisdesign provides flexibility in accommodating large extended whanau groups and for changingoccupancies over time as whanau and member needs and circumstances change.
